SNL 2020 has concluded. Viewing of presentations has closed.

Navigating the Meeting

SNL is excited to launch our first fully online meeting: SNL 2020 (Virtual Edition). We are committed to providing a virtual experience designed to deliver the high-quality research that you have come to expect at SNL meetings, featuring Keynote Lectures, Slide Sessions, Symposia, Posters, Award Talks, and a Student Session. Although we are meeting online instead of in-person, coffee breaks in our virtual lobby will allow attendees an opportunity for social interaction, networking, and connecting with colleagues.

Below are descriptions of session formats and how to access and participate in sessions. One advantage of the virtual meeting is that recordings of all presentations will be accessible online until January 31, 2021. You will never have to miss a session!

Talk Sessions

Keynote Lectures

The three Keynote Lectures will be broadcast live over Zoom Webinar. The presentations will be live captioned.

Symposia, Slide Sessions, Award Talks, and Student Session

Symposia, Slide Sessions, Award Talks, and the Student Session are presented in a “simulated live” format. A pre-recorded presentation is broadcast live in a Zoom Webinar. During the presentation, attendees can pose questions via the Q & A function, which the speaker may address during the Question and Answer period at the end of the presentation. All pre-recorded presentations are open captioned. Video recordings will be available online after each session and are downloadable until January 31, 2021.

Poster Sessions

Scheduled Poster Sessions

Poster Sessions will take place in Gather.Town, a virtual conference center, complete with a lobby and poster rooms. In Gather.Town, you will have your own avatar that you can maneuver around the conference center. Just like an in-person meeting, posters are numbered and labeled so that you can go directly to a specific poster or just stroll the aisles and browse. To view a particular poster and speak with the presenter, simply walk your avatar toward the poster title. Press x to display the poster. Talk to the author and any other avatars present in the private space around each poster board.

Gather.Town is a fun way to virtually simulate an in-person meeting (you even get to choose your avatar’s outfit for the day). The Gather.Town poster rooms, Broca and Wernicke, will be open during the session times listed on the Schedule of Events. For more information about navigating your way through Gather.Town, download Gather 101.

Gather.Town is open during these hours:

Wednesday: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm PDT
Thursday: 10:00 am – 7:00 pm PDT
Friday: 7:00 am – 7:00 pm PDT
Saturday: 7:45 am – 5:15 pm PDT

How to Attend a Poster Session at SNL 2020 (Virtual Edition)

To attend Poster Sessions, click on the SNL 2020 Gather.Town link. This link can be found:

There is one link for the entire SNL 2020 meeting. It does not change. Bookmarking this URL after your first visit will make subsequent visits easy to get to.

Google Chrome is the preferred browser for using Gather.Town.

The password to Gather.Town will be emailed to all registrants on Tuesday, October 20, and in all daily emailings thereafter.

Viewing Posters Outside of Scheduled Poster Sessions

At any time during the meeting, you can navigate to individual poster presentation pages to view the abstract, poster PDFs, and optional open-captioned video tours. The presentations will be made available a few days before the start of SNL 2020 so that attendees will have a chance to plan their itinerary by bookmarking sessions and posters. Poster PDFs and video tours will be available until January 31, 2021.

Gather.Town Tips and Tricks

Lost in the virtual world? Just respawn! Click on the gear icon at the bottom of your screen and press "respawn." You will be reborn at your original entry point. No, it will not make you younger.

Yikes, those thumbnail views of my friends are too small (and I forgot my reading glasses). Click on the double down arrow under the thumbnail. Now your video friends are large enough to see.

I'm a big picture person. How do can I see an overview of Gather.Town? Magnifying your screen is a great way to get the layout of SNL Gather.Town.

My friend ran away from me, and I can't find them. Search "participants" in the upper right corner of your screen. When you find your friend's name, click on it and then click "locate." Now follow the yellow brick road to your friend.

I'm a poster presenter, and I want to highlight crucial elements of my poster as I speak. You can screen share your poster and enlarge various areas as you discuss your amazing scientific data. On the control panel at the bottom of your screen, press the computer screen icon.

My friends and I need a private space to chat. Well, those tables and chairs are more than mere decorations and stumbling hazards. When you and your colleagues sit your avatars on a chair, it forms a private space where you cannot be overheard. Whatever happens at SNL 2020 stays at SNL 2020!

Oh no, I missed a poster session! Outside in the grassy area, are Time Travel Portals, which will transport you forward and backward in time. Simply maneuver your avatar into the session numbers. Keep pressing your up arrow key and you will be magically transported into the poster room. Once again, this will not make you younger, but it might make you older. Our data is not complete on that. Enter if you dare!!

I'm tired of my virtual outfit. I need a change of clothes (or a whole new body)! Go to the control panel at the bottom of your screen and click on the picture of your avatar. You can change your shirt or become a whole new character.

It's 3:00 am and I want to party in Gather.Town, but I cannot get in. It's not that kind of meeting--maybe next year!

Other Sessions

Coffee Breaks and Virtual Lounge

Yes, there are even Coffee Breaks! Just like an in-person meeting, attendees can enjoy a cup of coffee with colleagues between sessions. Join your fellow attendees in the Gather.Town lobby to discuss the research or simply catch up with old friends. Stroll the lobby and as your avatar nears another attendee or cluster of attendees, you will be connected on live video chat. Want to find a specific friend? Your screen will show a list of everyone present in Gather.Town. Click on who you want to meet, and a line will guide you straight to them. BYOC (Bring your own coffee)!

You are welcome to visit the Virtual Lobby and Lounge in Gather.Town at any time during meeting hours. Like any SNL meeting, the lobby area is where attendees can arrange to meet up with old friends or make new ones.

Virtual Exhibit Booths

SNL 2020 would not be possible without the support of our wonderful sponsors and exhibitors, many of whom have prepared special videos for SNL attendees. Please be sure to visit their virtual booths.
